When front-wheel drive started showing up in the early ’80s, a new type of suspension came with it: the MacPherson strut. A simpler suspension system, the MacPherson strut combines the spindle, spring, and shock absorber into a single, unitized component.

The bottom of the strut mounts to a control arm. The control arm has a bushing mounting it to the frame and a ball joint that connects it to the strut. The top of the MacPherson strut bolts to the inner fender and has a bearing cap to allow the entire strut to rotate.

There are variations in the MacPherson strut design from one car to the next. Some are repairable, allowing a shock absorber cartridge to be installed in the strut. Others can only be fixed with a full strut replacement.

You can test your struts when your car is parked by pushing down on each of the four corners of your vehicle. If your struts are good, your vehicle will not bounce repetitively. If the car or truck continues to bounce, you probably need a strut replacement. Uneven wear in your tires is also a sign that your struts need to be replaced.
