With a Twin A-Frame Suspension, on the free end—the end that mounts to the wheel side of the suspension—there’s a special pivot called a ball joint. The ball joint allows the suspension to pivot up and down, while also allowing it to rotate freely for steering. Both the upper and lower ball joint connect to a spindle, which connects the two A-frames while providing a mounting for the wheel and its bearings.

For the MacPherson strut suspension, the bottom of the strut mounts to a control arm. The control arm has a bushing mounting it to the frame and a ball joint that connects it to the strut. The top of the MacPherson strut bolts to the inner fender and has a bearing cap to allow the entire strut to rotate.

Regardless of the type of suspension your vehicle has, most state inspection programs include a suspension and steering check which involves checking the ball joints. This is important for your safety because, due to wear and tear, a ball joint could break and the driver could lose control of the vehicle possibly causing a collision.
