The charging system on most cars consists of an alternator, a battery, and an indicator on the dashboard to let you know if the system’s working or not.

The battery provides the voltage to run the car, but if left on its own, the battery would discharge in a matter of hours. To keep the battery fresh and fully powered, cars have a charging system. In most cases, that means an alternator. An alternator is a type of generating device that’s been wired to produce direct current (DC). This is a little different from the alternating current (AC) you’d get from a standard generator, in that the DC from an alternator is always positive. In general, an alternator does a better job of keeping the battery charged than an old-style generator would.
