You climb behind the wheel, put the key in the ignition, turn it to start, and the engine begins to crank. The sound you hear is the starter, a large electric motor that cranks the engine in the proper speed and direction to enable the engine to start.
Starters work very hard to crank an engine, and they require a lot of electrical current—far more than could go through the ignition switch. That’s why starters use a solenoid, a type of high-current relay designed to allow the ignition switch to energize the starter without having to deliver that much current itself.
In most cases, there won’t be any kind of maintenance for keeping your car’s starter working. Either it’ll work or it won’t. One thing you can do to keep the starter working right is to release the ignition key as soon as the engine starts. And never turn the key to start while the engine is running. Either of those conditions will reduce the starter’s life drastically.
There are, however, some warning signs that you may need a starter replacement. If you just hear clicking, grinding, or silence when you turn the key. You could experience intermittent starting, dimmed interior lights when you try to start the car, or hear your starter still running after the engine has started. Some of these indicator could be your starter—or another issue with your electrical system. So it’s important to get the proper diagnosis, and starter replacement if needed, from a certified technician.
