Virtually every gasoline-fired, internal combustion engine on the road today consists of these basic components: crankshaft, connecting rod, piston, cylinder, cylinder head, intake valve, intake manifold, spark plug, exhaust valve, and exhaust manifold. The downpipe connects the exhaust manifold to the catalytic converter—drawing toxic fumes away from the engine, and away from the cab of the vehicle.
Connected to your vehicle’s turbocharger, the downpipe also helps improve performance. Here’s how it works:
The internal combustion engine is a class of pump: the greater the volume going into the engine, the greater the power coming out. Bigger used to be better. Today, Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards have forced manufacturers to create cars with smaller engines. But, drivers still want power from their cars.
One way that manufacturers addressed the need for more power with better fuel economy was to increase flow through the smaller engines. They did this by adding turbochargers and superchargers to the engines. These devices are basically small fans that force additional air into the engine. The additional air enables the engine to create more power.
A vehicle could need a downpipe replacement due to rust, damage, or a clog leaking toxic fumes and affecting the car’s performance. Additionally, a driver may request a downpipe replacement to get more power from the engine. In either case, if your car needs a downpipe replacement, bring it to us. We’ll take care of your car and have you on your way safely.
