The catalytic converter is a type of chemical afterburner. By reacting to the exhaust gasses, it helps reduce emission levels by giving them one last chance to burn before they leave the tailpipe. On newer cars, catalytic converters also help reduce NOx (oxides of nitrogen) by separating the nitrogen and oxygen in a process called ‘‘reduction.’’

If there’s a problem with your catalytic converter, you may find out when your car fails an emissions test.

Nearly 40 states now have some form of enhanced emissions program in place. These tests usually involve several inspection procedures:

• Emission device tampering
• Dynamometer testing to examine the exhaust emission levels under simulated road conditions
• Gas cap test
• Evaporative system pressure and purge test (some states only)
• Onboard diagnostic self-test (some states only)

The limits for these tests usually are considerably more lenient than the car was designed to pass. The object is to identify ‘‘gross polluters’’ and to require them to be repaired.

If your catalytic converter is not functioning properly, if it has become clogged or otherwise damaged, you may also notice your car does not speed up as it used to when you press on the accelerator. And you might notice a drop in your gas mileage.
