The catalytic converter is a type of chemical afterburner. By reacting to the exhaust gasses, it helps reduce emission levels by giving them one last chance to burn before they leave the tailpipe. On newer cars, catalytic converters also help reduce NOx (oxides of nitrogen) by separating the nitrogen and oxygen in a process called ‘‘reduction.’’
