Many people are surprised that engine diagnostics are as much an art as they are a science. Cars are complicated today so simply telling your technician how the car is behaving or how the engine sounds is not enough for them to accurately diagnose the problem.

Automotive engine diagnostics can be tricky. For example, suppose your car’s Check Engine light comes on. The problem turns out to be a bad MAP sensor hose. The repair is simply a matter of replacing the hose. That’s the easy part: Anyone can do that. But finding that hose problem amidst the web of wires, sensors, and hoses—that’s the hard part. It usually involves connecting an expensive piece of equipment called a scan tool to the computer system.

This scan tool enables the technician to check for codes and read through sensor operation—basically letting the tech spy on the computer signals. The technician evaluates all the information based on the electrical signals and diagnostic codes, and then narrows the problem down to find the damaged hose.

Which part of the repair was more involved: identifying and isolating the problem, or replacing the hose? Which part required more equipment? More knowledge? More time?

Obviously the engine diagnostics were a large part of the repair and required more skill, equipment, and time.
