Any system as complex as the engine control system in today’s cars has a serious downside: How to identify and isolate problems in the system. These systems have several sensors and dozens of connectors and miles of wiring. A single loose connection can cause all sorts of problems, and take hours to identify during an engine diagnostics check.
That’s why you need a trained technician to run an engine diagnostics and performance check when your car is not running properly.
To help technicians find problems, computer control systems usually provide diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) to indicate problem areas.
Don’t get the wrong idea: Diagnostic trouble codes don’t diagnose the problem completely. Instead, they indicate problem areas, and show the technician where to look for a problem. The technician still needs to know how to examine electrical circuits to identify the specific cause of the code; it just points the technician in the right direction.
For example, say the computer provides a code for the throttle position sensor. That doesn’t necessarily mean the sensor is bad: It could just have a bad connection or be out of adjustment. The code tells the technician which circuit to check; it’s up to the technician to test that circuit and identify the specific failure.
If you are getting a “check engine” light or your vehicle is not operating properly, bring it in and we’ll see if it needs an engine diagnostics and performance check. If it does, we’ll expertly identify the issue(s), fix them, and have your car running right in no time.
