Rear Drum Brake Repair

Approx. Time: 120 Minutes | Price Range: Get Quote for Price

Brakes come in two common forms: drum and disc. Drum brakes consist of a set of brake shoes, which mount to the car’s suspension. These brake shoes are curved metal plates, with a soft friction material bonded or riveted to them. A metal drum slides over the shoes and mounts to the wheel. As you press on the brake pedal, the brake shoes move out to contact the brake drum. They rub against the drum, creating friction and slowing the wheel.

When your technician tells you your car needs a rear drum brake repair, the parts they’re referring to are the brake shoes or pads. The brake shoes and pads are designed to wear out. That’s why they’re softer than the drums. They wear out so the drums won’t.

However, your rear brake drums may eventually wear out—especially if the brake shoes and brake pads are not replaced promptly when they begin to show signs of wear. One sign your brake drums need to be repaired or replaced is if you hear a grinding noise coming from the rear of the vehicle when you apply the brakes.

To repair or replace the rear brake drum, your technician will remove the wheel and the shoes so they can inspect all the components involved. They will measure to make sure the drum is the proper thickness and do a visual check for cracks or heat spotting. If the brake drum is too thin, has cracks or spotting, it will need to be replaced. Minor scoring can be sanded down to give more life to your rear brake drum.

If your vehicle needs a rear drum brake repair, be sure to make your appointment promptly. The sooner you have the repairs done the more quickly you can be safely on your way.
