Uh-oh! A car pulls out right in front of you and you slam on your brakes. At that point you don’t care if they’re disk brakes or drum brakes…you just want them to stop the car in time. You breathe a sigh of relief when they do. But when your certified mechanic tells you your car needs a front disc brake repair, it’s nice to know how disc brakes work and what a front disc brake would require.

Disk brakes consist of two flat pads that mount inside a large caliper. These are the disk brake pads, which are flat metal plates with a soft friction material riveted to them. The caliper bolts to the car’s suspension. A flat disc, or rotor, bolts to the wheel. When you press the brake pedal, the caliper presses against the brake pads, which squeeze the rotor between them. This creates the friction to slow the wheel. A front disc brake repair usually involves replacing the brake shoes and pads which are designed to wear out.

When this friction wears out the brake shoes and pads necessitating a front disc brake repair, your certified technician will also let you know if the if the rotor (disc) needs to be resurfaced. If the friction has worn this part down too, the rotor will be included in the front disc brake repair so you can stop safely next time you’re on the road.
