Driveshaft Balance

Your car’s drivetrain takes the horsepower from the engine and turns it into torque to turn the wheels. When we talk about the drivetrain, we’re really discussing two main components: the transmission and the differential. But it also includes the components that connect them to the wheels, such as the driveshaft—a shaft that transfers power from the transmission to the differential on rear-wheel drive cars.

A driveshaft needs to be properly balanced in order to transfer power evenly to the wheels. Any number of things may contribute to a driveshaft balance problem, chief among them missing balance weights and broken welds as well as built-up dirt, grease, or even paint. Loose U-Joints can also interfere with driveshaft balance.

Should your driveshaft begin to deteriorate, you may notice vibrations beneath the floorboards while the running vehicle is standing still or moving. You may also hear squeaking or have trouble turning corners. Regular inspections by a certified technician can help you avoid running into driveshaft balance issues.
