When you turn the key, you hear a rapid clicking sound, and the dash lights dim. Or perhaps your vehicle is blowing headlights and taillights much more often that you would expect due to intermittent charging issues. Here’s how the alternator works. The alternator charges the battery and provides power to operate vehicle electrical systems. When the alternator fails, the engine will continue to run for a short time—generally around 15 minutes—until the battery discharges to the point where the engine ignition system will no longer function. Or, it could function intermittently which is harder to diagnose. In either case the vehicle will need an alternator replacement.

An alternator replacement should include inspection and replacement of the drive belt as necessary, along with a starter current draw test and a battery inspection and load test.
