Starting Charging Batteries

Starting your car should be the easy part, right? You climb behind the wheel, put the key in the ignition, turn it to start, and the engine begins to crank. The sound you hear is the starter, a large electric motor that cranks the engine in the proper speed and direction.

Starting and charging batteries are two different things. Your battery provides the voltage to run the car, but if left on its own, the battery would discharge in a matter of hours. To keep the battery fully powered, the car uses a charging system. In most cases, that means an alternator, a type of generating device that’s been wired to produce direct current (DC).

Starting and charging can’t happen without the starter, the alternator, and the battery. If your car is cranking slowly, if a jump doesn’t help your battery hold its power, or if your car isn’t starting at all, you need a certified technician to review your car’s starting and charging system.
