Climate Control Systems

Climate control systems have come a long way since the late 19th century when someone had the great idea of piping hot water from the engine into a small heat exchanger—like a radiator, only smaller—mounted in the passenger compartment so the passengers could be warmer in the wintertime. At that stage, air conditioning required you to open the windows and take the top down if you could.

Today’s cars offer advanced climate control systems designed to anticipate temperature demand and adjust their operation to provide a comfortable environment under just about any conditions. There are even some climate control systems that provide zone controls to allow the passenger to enjoy one temperature setting while the driver can choose a different one.

Refrigerants for climate control systems have come a long way, too. For years, when anyone talked about charging their air conditioning system, they were talking about Freon®— DuPont’s trade name R12. But back in the 1960s, scientists noticed that ultraviolet radiation from the sun had been increasing due to a reduction in ozone in the upper atmosphere. So a new chemical was developed and most cars built since 1996 have been using the new refrigerant: R134a in their climate control systems. Tests show that R134a is safe for the ozone layer.

Your certified technician has been thoroughly trained to spot any issues with your climate control systems, from the compressor and condenser to the grill and belt as well as checking for the proper type and level of refrigerant. If you notice any strange noises; have fan, vent, heating or cooling issues—let your technician know so your climate control systems can be checked, fixed if needed, and you can drive in away in comfort.
