Here’s a schedule for some of the more common maintenance items necessary, along with an average time and mileage recommendation. You can refer to this schedule as a basic guide for determining when you should perform these maintenance items.

But not every car’s maintenance schedule is the same, so always refer to your owner’s manual for recommendations specific to your model. And remember to factor in your personal driving habits when determining whether to consider the schedule for ‘‘normal’’ or ‘‘severe’’ conditions.

How to Tell if Your Driving is Normal or Severe.
Another condition of vehicle maintenance schedules is whether your driving is normal or severe. The intervals listed are always for normal driving conditions. For severe conditions, you’re supposed to reduce the time or mileage between maintenance intervals.

Here’s a list of conditions that could be considered severe:

• Short trips and local driving.
• Stop-and-go driving.
• Sustained high-speed driving.
• Extremely cold or hot weather.
• Wet, snow-covered, or icy roads.
• Dirty air, caused by construction or dirt roads.
• Excessive idling.
• Towing a boat, camper, or trailer.
• Driving at high altitudes.

If your driving consists of any of these special conditions, you should consider your driving conditions as severe and increase your maintenance schedule accordingly. After all, regular maintenance improves not only your safety, but the safety of your passengers as well.
