U-Joint Replacement

Your car’s drivetrain takes the horsepower from the engine and turns it into torque to turn the wheels. When we talk about the drivetrain, we’re really discussing two main components: the transmission and the differential. But it also includes components that connect them to the wheels, such as the driveshaft, axles, U-joints, CV-joints and, on cars with manual transmissions, the clutch.

The universal joint, or u-joint, is a cross-shaped set of pivots that allow the transmission and differential to operate at different levels. It’s part of the driveshaft assembly and allows the rear axle to move up and down without snapping the propeller shaft. The universal joint is in constant motion and can eventually wear out requiring a u-joint replacement.

When your u-joint is beginning to fail, you may hear a clunking noise when you shift your transmission from one position to the next—say, to drive from neutral. While driving, you could feel vibrations that get worse as your vehicle picks up speed or a high-pitched squeak when the vehicle is in motion. When the u-joint fails it could lead to a breakdown or a serious accident if it goes while you’re driving.
